May 29, 2016· I'm using a mould that me the old man made about 30 years ago, plaster paris around wood plugs. Just stick a nail, slightly greased in he middle, and away you go. Also have a al mould, works ok, but prefer the other.... Memories and all.. In fact hes here this weekend, maybe a sinker making mission is on.

Apr 29, 2003· I can tell you that in lost wax casting, you should use the wax made for the process. Candle wax does not burn out clean enough to make a good cast. Also, if your doing anything hotter than 600 degrees use the proper mixture of plaster and sand, The plaster of paris I used tends to get very brittle when burning out the wax.

What you make the mold out of totally depends on how many parts yo need that mold to make. If you are only looking to make a dozen or two dozen you can use plaster, clay, high temp rtv, or even wood. Aluminum molds tend to be good for any where from 20 thousand parts .

I may have slightly overheated the lead as the pine mold charred quite a bit, but nonetheless turned out fine and maintained its structure you can see my process here, along with some more lessons learned!

Nov 22, 2009· absolutely NOT modeling clay. that stuff is not made to have 650 degree molten metal poured anywhere near it. l sincerely hope you DO NOT try it. the hot lead is liable to make it boil up in your face. buy an aluminum mold or use plaster of paris if you must but only after waiting a week to be absolutely certain it is dry.

Mar 21, 2010· It is slower, but works great and is a labor of love when addicted to those blue cats. Main thing is that it is a cheap way to go. My old friend said; that old timers would use different sized cane for their sinker moulds. They would cut the cane at the cross dividers and use the different diameter cane for bigger weights.

Pour plaster into molds immediately or it will thicken and harden, and you will have to make it again. Throw out unused plaster. Once it starts to dry, it cannot be made liquid again. Buy plaster powder at a craft store and add water to make plaster of paris.
